Homesick

Concha can order eggs in six different languages.
We met miles ago, flying out of Delhi. I had stepped
out of the high mountains down to my last rupees.
In Cairo we were separated
by a bulletproof window between
her desert plans and my necessary flight home.
We had Oregon in common.
When I shouted that I would make it back
for the strawberries, she grew as quiet and still
as the guards with their rifles
angled across their chests.
